How to Measure Your Window for Blinds

How to Measure Your Window for Blinds

As made to measure blinds suppliers, we know that measuring your window for a new blind can be a headache. So to help you out, we’ve put together a quick guide on how you can correctly measure your window - saving you money, time... and stress! Let's take a look.

How to Measure Your Window For New Blinds in 3 Simple Steps

1. Decide whether your blind will be fitted in the recess

First of all, you need to decide whether you want to fit your made to measure blinds inside the window recess (flush to the window), or outside the window recess (mounted onto the wall). See the image below to illustrate what we mean:

Inside or outside

For inside the window recess, ensure there are no obstructions preventing the blind from closing, e.g. protruding handles. Fitting the blinds inside the window recess gives a snug, tidy look, however bear in mind that it can restrict the amount of light that comes through the window when rolled back.

Fitting your blind outside of the window recess allows you to utilise the window ledge space, while also letting more natural daylight into the room when retracted. Plus, when your blinds are fully drawn, they’re more likely to block any unwanted light. However, this also mean that they’ll hide any ornaments on the windowsill. Thankfully, measuring outside of the recess is more forgiving, meaning you can be more flexible with the size of your blind.

2. Measure your window

For the next step, you’ll need a trusty measuring tape to measure your window.

If you're fitting the blind inside the recess, we suggest measuring the width at 3 different points - top, middle, and bottom. Should your measurements come up different (quite common if you have an older house), we would advise opting for the smallest measurement to allow the blind to be lowered without getting stuck. Repeat for the length of the window.

If you're fitting the blind outside of the window recess, we always recommend allowing at least a 5cm overlap on the width and a 10cm drop. This will help to ensure that the blind can fully block out any sunlight and cover the window fully. By measuring the exact length of the window recess, you are allowing light to escape through the cracks - so adding that little extra room will ensure this doesn’t happen.

Top tip: Measure more than once to save any wrong measurements that may results in purchasing the wrong size blinds. As made to measure items are bespoke, they generally aren't refundable, meaning that it could be a costly mistake!

3. Choose your fabric & place your order

Once you've gathered the measurements together, pop into our Garstang Shop and have a look through our fabric books to choose your desired blind fabric. We can then provide you with an accurate quote.

While we offer some ready-made roman blinds in standard sizes online, you should note that our offering is far wider than this. Our made-to-measure blinds can be made from almost any of the fabrics featured online or in our shop – just ask one of our team members who will be more than happy to help.

If you’re worried your measurements may be slightly off, don't panic! Once you’ve picked out your chosen blind fabric, we’re happy to help with a final complementary measurement service in your home to ensure you get the perfect blind to suit your window.
