Interior Colour Schemes: Brown

At Harrison Cropper Garstang Gifts and Interiors shop, we’ve noticed that as the years go by there have been numerous changes in home décor trends. The 70s saw loud and proud interiors with wacky prints and shag carpets, whilst 80s homes were filled with peach and blue with lots of frill. The 90s were all about brass colours and showing off your impressive CD collection, yet as moved into the 2000’s we saw our home décor change and simplify. We no longer seek to impress our guest with trinket and ornament collections, but instead we opt for a clean minimalist look. The most popular décor trend from 2014 onwards is the grey and mirrored theme.

Grey mirrored theme

Whilst we love the sleek grey theme of the modern home, we can’t help but feel equally drawn to another theme. There’s something extremely homely about a brown colour scheme. Executed right, the colour brown creates a rich, welcoming feel to your home. Not only is it classic and cosy, but it looks great all year round. Psychologists have linked the colour brown with the feeling of calm and relaxation, hence why so many spas follow a brown theme. Brown represents the earth, and many find it makes them feel safe and comforted, making it the ideal colour for a living room.

By teaming the colour brown with a lighter colour such as sand or cream, you are preventing the darker colour from overpowering the room, or making it feel enclosed. Adding a feature wall in brown while painting the rest of the cream gives the room a fresh feel. It also gives you the opportunity to accessorise with colours such as blue, pink, yellow, gold, red and mint, switching the colour scheme up each season.  The colour brown adds a regal look feel and look to the home.

At Harrison Cropper we stock a range of beautiful home décor that will look stunning when paired with brown. Create a cosy country feel by accessorising with tartan print soft furnishings such as cushions and throws. One of our personal favourites for a traditional country style living room is our handmade rust balmoral checked cushion. They look extra comforting and cosy when paired with soft brown faux fur accessories.

Besides check patterns, wildlife patterns can also be used to create interest in a country style brown themed room. We love the Highland Stag cushion for this purpose, the stunning brown stags and brown piping are ideal for co-ordinating with brown leather sofas and faux fur accessories.

Choosing cushions with metallic running through them is a great way to add texture and interest if prints and patterns aren’t your thing. For a stripped back look, we love the Zonda Bronze cushion. The flashes of shiny bronze create warmth while also adding dimension to your space. Keep it simple and complement your accent cushion with our plain, super soft velvet cushions in shades of cream and sand.
