The history of footstools
Its believed that footstools originated from Ancient Egypt. Here they were used as a practical piece of furniture to assist the user when climbing onto a tall chair, allowing them to sit comfortably without their legs dangling. Not only was this a practical addition to many homes and temples, the Ancient Egyptians believed the soul rested on the footstool, carving different symbols and stories onto them. These footstools were often passed down through generations and kept as family heirlooms.
Fast forward thousands of years, the footstool gained popularity once again around the 16th century. Not only were they used for resting feet, but they also doubled up as a children’s seat or transportable chair. As the footstool evolved, so did the shape and style. In the 18th century, longer footstools became popular. It was often placed in front of the fire, and the elongated shape allowed the whole family to place their feet to warm them up on cold nights.
Modern day footstools
Today, the modern footstool provides a similar purpose in the home, with more emphasis on design. Not only are they extremely comfortable, they’re also a decorative accessory featuring different prints, patterns and fabrics. At Harrison Cropper Gifts and Interiors, our personal favourite footstools are produced by Scottish homeware manufacturers, Voyage Maison. Voyage Maison footstools have a fresh contemporary country feel, incorporating artistic interpretations of the British countryside.
Their most popular footstool design is the Monty footstool, a stunning cylindrical shaped stool with four wooden legs, the perfect height for resting your feet while lounging on the sofa or in your favourite armchair. Some of favourite Monty stool designs include the charming Jack Rabbit, enchanting Moorland Stag and the stunning Thistle Glen.
