How to Correctly Fit Made to Measure Roman Blinds

At Harrison Cropper, makers and suppliers of made to measure blinds, we know that purchasing your blackout blinds is the easy step (when it comes to physical effort at least!).

The tricky part begins when fitting your new blinds to your window.

If you’re local, we can recommend a self-employed fitter to do it for you. However, if you’re planning to fit your Roman Blinds yourself, we’ve put together a short guide on how to do so correctly. Let's dive in!

How to Prepare to Install Your Roman Blinds

First things first - if you’re reading this guide, you probably already have the correct-sized Roman Blinds for your window. However, if you’re yet to measure your window for blinds, please refer to our measuring guide.

For a stress-free fitting, we would advise gathering the following items to hand in advance:

  • A pencil – to mark where the holes shall go in the wall
  • A tape measure – to measure the width of the blind and your wall
  • A sprit level – to ensure the blinds are perfectly level
  • A drill
  • Screws
  • A wall plug – to help the screws grip
  • A hot brew – just because(!)

A 5-Step Guide to Successfully Fitting Made to Measure Roman Blinds

1. Mark where the brackets will go

Use your brackets and pencil to mark the points on the wall where your screws will be. Then, using a tape measure, measure the length of the Roman Blind to ensure that you place your brackets at the right spacing. Regardless of whether you live in a new build or an older property, you should use your sprit level to ensure that the marks are level to one another.

2. Drill the holes

Now that you have your bracket placement marked out and ready, it’s time to start drilling. We would suggest drilling the screw only 2/3 of a way in to begin with. If the bottom of the bracket has moved place slightly, then re-line this to match the markings and begin drilling the second screw. This can be drilled all the way in. Once complete, go back to the first screw and drill all the way in, too. Then repeat this step on the other side.

3. Hook your blind into the brackets

With the brackets in place, you will need to take the rail off the Roman Blind. Hold it at a 45 degree angle and hook the clips into the brackets. Once you have placed the clips in the hooks, move the rail until you hear a click. When you hear the click on both sides, your Roman Blind is successful installed!

4. Ensure the cord is fitted safely

The final step is to ensure that the cord for the Roman Blind poses no risk for anyone in the home (including children and pets). We would not recommend placing the cord for the Roman Blind anywhere near cots, or anywhere a pet would be able to get hold of it. The best option is to fit the cord device at least 1.5m from the floor on the side your cord is fitted. Once you have decided on your desired placement, drill the cord safety feature in to the wall.

5. Enjoy your new Roman Blind!

Finally, the most important part - take a step back, admire your hard work and tag Harrison Cropper on Instagram to show off your handy work. Oh, and it's probably time to make another brew if the last one’s gone cold!
